How to work essential oils into your skin care routine

Natural ingredients can work wonders for your skin, and provide a great alternative to harsh synthetic ingredients. Essential oils are fragrant extracts derived from flowers and plants. They are made up of tiny molecules, which means they are easily absorbed and can deliver active ingredients to the deeper layers of your skin. Essential oils are renowned for their beauty-enhancing benefits and have the ability to effectively treat everything from aging skin, to acne and dry, dull complexions.

What makes essential oils so special?

Less chance of irritation

Essential oils come from natural sources and are far more gentle on your skin. On the other hand, products containing artificial chemicals and ingredients can be harsh on your skin, leading to sensitivity and reactions. Using products containing naturally-sourced ingredients is the best way to keep skin looking its best, without risking any unpleasant side effects or irritation.

Better results for your skin

Natural ingredients like essential oils, have been used in beauty products for centuries and have time-tested and proven results. They are packed with vitamins and nutrients that are beneficial for your skin. Why use products containing potentially harmful ingredients, when you can achieve the same, if not better results, from natural products?

Natural products can be safely released into the environment without having a negative impact. However, products made from artificial ingredients can be highly toxic, and these chemicals can be extremely harmful to the environment. Switching to natural skin care will give you beautiful, healthy skin, while also reducing carbon emissions and helping the environment.

Mood-boosting effects

Essential oils are renowned for their mood-boosting effects and have been used in spa and relaxation treatments for centuries, to soothe muscles and relax the mind. Essential oils from plants like lavender, have been shown to effectively reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. Incorporating these into your skin care routine can therefore improve your mood and help you to relax and unwind after a busy day.

Which ones are best?

The best essential oils for your skin will depend upon your skin type and concerns. We have put together this useful guide to help you choose the best oils for you.

  • Oily skin - oily and acne prone skin can benefit from tea tree and rosemary oil. These have antibacterial properties which gets rid of acne-causing bacteria to help treat and prevent breakouts. These oils are also great for controlling oil production.
  • Dry skin - Rose oil is ideal for people with dry skin as it helps soothe and hydrate dry, itchy skin and improves overall skin health.
  • Combination skin - Sandalwood essential oil is perfect for managing combination skin. The oil is balancing and will effectively minimise large pores and treat oily spots, all while renewing the skin.
  • Aging skin - Lavender oil is full of antioxidants which helps to hydrate and plump the skin, protect against wrinkle-causing free radicals, and regenerate skin cells for a more youthful complexion.
  • Sensitive skin - People with sensitive skin, should avoid citrus oils like lemon and orange, as these oils increase sun sensitivity and can irritate sensitive skin. Rose oil is gentle on the skin and contains active ingredients that can help reduce the symptoms of sensitive skin issues.

How can I incorporate these into my skin care?

There are plenty of simple ways to include essential oils in your skin care routine. You can look for products that have been formulated using essential oils and other natural ingredients. Or, you can buy you own essential oils and then mix these into your skin care products - try adding a few drops of essential oil into your favourite moisturiser.

Remember that you should never apply essential oils directly to your skin - they are incredibly concentrated and could lead to irritation and sensitivity. For that reason, you should always dilute essential oils before you use them. Essential oils should be diluted in a 3-5% solution, so just one drop per 1 ml of carrier lotion will do. Just with other products, it is important to patch test essential oils by apply a small amount to the inside of your wrist before applying essential oil to your face or other areas of your body.
