How To Build A Skin Care Routine

We all want beautiful, flawless skin, but this doesn’t happen overnight. Great skin is not simply a matter of genetics - your daily habits have a big impact on how your skin looks. Do you have a skin care routine? Or, do you prefer to just fall asleep each night and not worry too much about your skin? You may not think too much about your skin care routine, but the truth is you should. Taking proper care of your skin is important, not only so it looks good, but also so it is able to protect your body from harmful elements. If you don’t know where to start, then don’t worry! We’re put together our top tips on how to build a skin care routine:

Identify your skin type

The right skin care routine starts with knowing your skin type. Different skin types require different solutions, so it’s important to use products that have been tailored to your skin. There are four main skin types - normal, dry, oily and combination.

Normal skin: Skin that is balanced, clear, and not sensitive.

Dry skin: Skin with dry and flakey areas that may feel tight.

Oily skin: Skin that is shiny, greasy, and may have big pores.

Combination skin- Skin that has a combination of oily and flakey areas.

Once you have identified your skin type, you will be able to find products formulated for your skin and get the most out of your skin care routine.

The basics - cleanse, tone, moisturise

The three main steps in any skin care routine are - cleansing, toning and moisturising. These should be carried out every morning and evening for best results.

  1. Cleanse- Washing your face is the most basic and essential step of any routine. It is important to wash your face twice a day, morning and evening, to remove dirt, oil and bacteria. Use a gentle cleanser that is free from alcohol, fragrance, or harsh chemicals, as these can cause irritation.
  1. Tone- Once your face is clean, you should use a toner to remove any last traces of dirt and oil. Toner also tightens your pores, which helps create a barrier against bacteria or other pollutants.
  1. Moisturise- The last step, is to use a moisturiser to nourish and hydrate your skin. Everyone should apply moisturiser, but the texture will depend on your skin type. People with dry skin, should opt for a rich moisturiser that will boost hydration levels. Whereas, someone with oily skin would be better off using a light-weight, mattifying lotion to help balance the skin.

Enhance your routine with face masks

Once you have your basic skin care routine in place, you should then focus on treating any problem areas. Face masks are the best and easiest way to target skin issues and improve the overall appearance of your skin. You should elevate your skin care routine with a face mask one to three times a week for best results. Hydrogel facial masks are the newest product on the market and can do wonders for your skin in less than 30 minutes! They can deliver amazing results for every skin type, so we think everyone should include a hydrogel sheet mask in their routine. Add exfoliation to your routine

A buildup on dead skin cells on the surface of your skin can lead to a dull-looking, dry complexion. We recommend using an exfoliator once or twice a week, to gently remove dead skin and keep your face looking radiant and healthy. Exfoliating can also help prepare skin for the other steps in your beauty routine, as removing the layer of dead skin cells ensures your skin is primed to absorb nutrients from your other products.

Protect your skin from UV rays

Don’t forget that every skin care routine needs to include protection from the sun. Daily and consistent sunscreen use helps to prevent the development of fine lines, wrinkles, discolouration, and other signs of aging. More importantly, using sunscreen can help prevent certain skin cancers from forming. You should apply sun protection lotion with an SPF of at least 30, to your skin year round.

Give it time

Remember that amazing skin doesn’t happen overnight, so don’t get discouraged if you don’t see results straight away. You should generally use use a product for at least six weeks, once or twice a day, to notice a difference.

Use these tips to create your own skin care routine, banish bad skin days for good, and get your skin looking its beautiful best in no time!
